The Maple Ridge RCMP are warning residents about a scam in which fraudsters arrange to collect bank or credit cards directly from victims’ homes.

Police say they have received multiple reports of scammers contacting residents while posing as representatives of financial institutions or credit card companies. The callers claim an account has been compromised and create a sense of urgency to convince victims to hand over their cards.

Investigators say the fraudsters may use pressure tactics and reference personal account information to make their claims appear legitimate.

RCMP remind the public that legitimate financial institutions and credit card companies will never send someone to a person’s home to collect bank cards, credit cards, cash, or sensitive financial information.

Police advise anyone who receives such a call to hang up immediately.

“Frauds can pop up anywhere, anytime,” said Maple Ridge RCMP Cst. Avinesh Bali.

“As difficult as it can be sometimes, residents need to remain vigilant and take simple steps to protect themselves. Report all suspicious activity and please touch base with friends or family who may be more susceptible.”

Anyone who believes they may have been targeted by a scam is encouraged to contact their financial institution and report the incident to police.
