The Nanaimo RCMP are investigating a fatal collision involving a commercial fuel tanker and a pedestrian that occurred Wednesday morning in downtown Nanaimo.

Police say officers were called to the Co-op Gas Bar at 60 Victoria Cres. at approximately 6:46 a.m.

According to investigators, a gasoline semi-truck tanker was backing into the parking lot when it struck a pedestrian who was either seated or lying near the curb between the sidewalk and the parking area.

The pedestrian, a 42-year-old woman, died at the scene from her injuries. Police have identified the woman and are in the process of notifying and supporting her family.

“The circumstances surrounding this tragic incident remain under investigation, and investigators are gathering evidence to determine exactly what occurred,” said Sgt. Kris Clark of the BC RCMP.

The BC Coroners Service has also launched an investigation into the death.
