The Langley RCMP has shared video of a Ford Ranger swerving, driving on the shoulder, and then crashing on Highway 1 early Saturday morning.

Police say they received a call around 3:30 a.m. from a witness who was following the truck on the highway near 264 Street.

“As the witness was relaying this information to the police dispatcher, the Ford Ranger crashed into a cement divider and came to rest on the shoulder of the highway,” police said in a news release.

“This was captured on dash cam from the witness.”

When Mounties arrived, they found that the novice driver, a 23-year-old man from Kamloops, appeared to be impaired, leading them to conduct an impaired driving investigation.

After failing a roadside screening, the man was issued a 90-day driving ban, a 30-day vehicle impound, and a $500 fine, police say.

“We are thankful that this driver’s ambitious goal to drive to Kamloops from Burnaby did not end in a fatality,” said Cpl. Mansoor Sahak.

“Impaired driving is the leading cause of criminal deaths in Canada, and it is totally preventable.”

Police say anyone who suspects a driver may be impaired should call 911 immediately.
