Police say an Edmonton semi-truck driver had his vehicle impounded after allegedly speeding through a Prince George, B.C., school zone going 81 km/h earlier this month.

BC Highway Patrol say the 34-year-old also received multiple fines, including for excessive speeding and failing to have insurance and out-of-province registration.

Authorities say the truck was recorded on a laser reader going 51 km/h above the posted speed limit near the Pine View Elementary School on Sept. 9.

“When the tractor-trailer was pulled over, the police officer noticed some defects,” said Sgt. Michael McLaughlin. “We called in Commercial Vehicle Safety and Enforcement (CVSE) and both the trailer and the tractor were taken off the road.”

The defects, according to police, were ineffective brakes. Those repairs, along with the costs for the tow, impound, tickets and inspections, are expected to cost the driver $3,000.

The Sept. 9 school-zone operation also led to another impound for excessive speed, as well as tickets for speeding, tinted windows, illegible licence plates and other offences.

“We’re working in every corner of the province,” said McLaughlin. “We’d rather you obey the law and drive safely, but if you choose otherwise, we’ll pass along financial consequences.”
