The Vancouver Police Department (VPD) says an Alberta man has been arrested following a high-speed pursuit that ended in a tactical vehicle stop downtown.
Police say they were patrolling near East Hastings Street and Dunlevy Avenue shortly after 2:30 p.m. Monday when they noticed a parked car — a BMW with Alberta plates — with a woman in the front seat that appeared “visibly distraught.”
“Concerned for her safety and well-being, officers activated their emergency lights and sirens to conduct a welfare check,” VPD said in a news release.
The vehicle then sped away, the release says.
“Due to the perceived threat to the passenger, a police pursuit was authorized,” it said.
“Multiple police vehicles pursued the BMW into downtown Vancouver, where the suspect drove at high speeds, weaved into oncoming traffic, and showed a complete disregard for public safety.”
Officers say they used a “vehicle interdiction tactic” near Waterfront Station to execute a “high-risk takedown.”
The VPD says a 44-year-old Alberta man has been arrested and faces possible charges of forcible confinement, drug possession, and dangerous driving.
No injuries were reported, and the woman is cooperating with police, the news release says.
