The Squamish Nation announced that a black bear was killed by RCMP early Tuesday morning after finding its way to Lonsdale and First Avenue.
According to the Squamish Nation, the North Vancouver RCMP notified them of the death so that their Rights and Title team could take care of the bear in their cultural ways.
The Squamish Nation stated that this communication and access to the black bear aligned with their expectations for other agencies dealing with wildlife.
The bear was seen eating out of garbage and green-waste bins in the area and showed no fear when residents and officers approached it.
The community has observed more black bears in the area than usual this year and with bears preparing for hibernation, BC Conservation Officer Services has reminded the public to be bear aware.
