Vancouver man sentenced to jail after 2024 hit-and-run that injured RCMP officer

A Vancouver man has been convicted after seriously injuring an RCMP officer during a 2024 traffic stop, police announced Wednesday.

Mounties say 58-year-old Tobin Haas has been sentenced to just over one year in jail.

“On Feb. 17, 2024, just after 10:30 a.m., a BC Highway Patrol (BCHP) officer stopped a grey Nissan on Highway 91 near 72 Avenue in Delta, B.C., because the driver was suspected of having an outstanding arrest warrant,” the BC RCMP said in a news release.

The man was alone in the car at the time, the release says.

“When he was asked for a driver’s licence and identification, Haas sped away from the scene, dragging the police officer until he was able to disengage.”

The officer is still recovering from his injuries, police say.

On March 25, 2026, Haas pleaded guilty to dangerous operation of a vehicle causing bodily harm and driving while suspended.

In addition to jail time, he has been handed an additional three-year driving prohibition and a two-year probation order.
