Multiple police agencies across Lower Mainland take down retail thieves

An investigation that involved multiple police agencies across the Lower Mainland has resulted in the arrest of two people and charges laid against one, say police.

Christian Darren Leggatt has been charged with possession of stolen property, possession of a weapon dangerous to the public peace, intimidation by threats or violence and assault with a weapon.

On Oct. 1, Pitt Meadows RCMP were called to a report of a theft outside of a store at Meadowtown Shopping Centre.

A woman had been stopped by loss prevention officers but got away with help from a man in a car who allegedly had a weapon.

The car the man was in was identified and details of the incident were shared with police agencies across the Lower Mainland.

On Oct. 2, BC Highway Patrol’s Prohibited Driver Enforcement Team found the car in Maple Ridge. They started surveillance on the car while Maple Ridge RCMP, Coquitlam RCMP Strike Force Team and the Lower Mainland Integrated Police Dog Service all joined surveillance efforts.

The car eventually ended up parking in Port Coquitlam, where the two occupants were taken into custody, police say.

The woman who was in the car with Leggatt has been released on an undertaking with a future court date. Police say no charges have been laid against her yet.

Leggatt is currently in custody, awaiting a bail hearing.
