Vancouver police draw guns on man driving his own car, still listed as stolen

A man had police guns drawn on him while driving his own vehicle after failing to report that he had recovered it following a previous theft, the Vancouver Police Department (VPD) says.

The VPD says officers were patrolling in the area of 33 Avenue and Victoria Drive when they saw a vehicle driving with one of its front tires askew.

When officers looked up the vehicle in the police database, they found it had been reported stolen.

“To prevent the vehicle from continuing, officers initiated a traffic stop,” Const. Megan Lui told CityNews.

“During the stop, the stolen vehicle struck another vehicle.”

Officers removed the driver, who they later determined was the vehicle’s registered owner, police say.

Lui confirmed officers drew their firearms during the incident, but did not specify at what stage of the stop the weapons were drawn.

No one was injured during the incident, Lui said.
