Kicking Horse gondola closed until further notice after fall

Kicking Horse Mountain Resort near Golden, B.C. says one of it’s gondolas will be out of service for the foreseeable future after it crashed to the ground Monday morning.

In an online statement, the resort says the base terminal of the Golden Eagle Express gondola fell approximately one metre to the ground after the lift hanger broke.

Patrol teams and first responders were immediately sent to the scene, Kicking Horse adds. There were eight people in the cabin at the time of the fall, no of which were seriously injured.

The passengers were safely unloaded using a rope rescue and helicopter rescue.

“Our sincere apologies go out to every one of our guests who have had to go through this experience today, and we thank them all for their patience and understanding” said Richard Oszust, Area Manager, in a statement.

Kicking Horse says a full inspection of the Golden Eagle Express gondola is now underway, with help from the manufacturer’s specialists and relevant authorities, to determine the cause of the incident and next steps.

The Golden Eagle Express gondola will remain closed until further notice.

The resort returns to operations Tuesday after closing Monday following the incident.

The Catamount and Pioneer Chairlifts and the Jelly Bean Magic Carpet are open for use, however, reduced lift tickets are in effect. All outlets and services are regularly scheduled hours of operation except for the Eagle’s Eye Restaurant and Heaven’s Door Yurt.

Terrain above the Pioneer Chair will be closed as there isn’t mountain safety response and avalanche control available.
