Witnesses told police that an excavator that was towed on a flat deck trailer hit the overpass.
The driver stopped and got out of the truck’s cab, but drove away shortly after.
Police were able to locate and detain the driver about 20 minutes later.
“Any time there is a collision that potentially causes damage, the driver must stop to provide information,” said Cpl. Michael McLaughlin.
No injuries were reported, and the police are investigating the incident.
After a first assessment, BC Highway Patrol says that the damage to the overpass appears to be superficial.
The BC Ministry of Transportation and Transit will examine the damage further to ensure the safety of the overpass.
Delays are expected, but southbound lanes remain open.
