The regional district says a state of local emergency was declared to support emergency response to rising waters, flooding and the risk to property.
An emergency operations centre has been opened at the Comox Valley Regional District. Flood response activities are occurring throughout the region, according to the district.
Residents are asked to follow directions of emergency service personnel, obey all road and trail closures, and stay away from water bodies.
The B.C. River Forecast Centre had issued flood warnings for the Courtenay, Tsolum, and Dove Creek rivers however the warnings were lifted on Saturday as rainfall eased across the region. A flood watch for the Englishman River also ended.
The centre said wet weather is expected to continue on Sunday but rainfall won’t be as heavy as the past few days.
River levels have reached peak levels from recent storm events, and are now receding, the centre said in an update Saturday morning. In most areas flows are now below levels of flood concern.
Brennan Day, the MLA for Courtenay-Comox said in a Facebook post that the Courtenay fire department was helping with the evacuations. He also said the dam is near capacity but expected to subside.
Although there was no rain warning in effect Saturday for the region, Environment and Climate Change is forecasting wet weather until at least Friday.
