Police say ‘stay vigilant’ after sexual assaults in North Surrey and Burnaby

Women were attacked from behind three separate incidents that span just a few weeks apart in the different municipalities

Police are asking for the public’s help and reminding people to stay vigilant after two women were assaulted in separate incidents in North Surrey, and one in Burnaby.

On Jan. 21, Metro Vancouver Transit Police began investigating a sexual assault that occurred at the Scott Road Park and Ride Lot A, adjacent to the Scott Road SkyTrain Station.

Just after 4 p.m. on Jan. 21, a woman was walking from the SkyTrain to her car in the far corner of the parking lot — near 110th Avenue and 126A Street — was approached by a man from behind and sexually assaulted. The woman fought back and the suspect fled toward the station.

That suspect was described as a tall Caucasian man, in his mid-to-late 20s, with a medium build, light-coloured eyes and a partial brown beard. He was wearing a blue zip-up hoodie with the hood pulled up, dark blue jeans and a black toque.

Transit Police want any witnesses, pertinent dashcam video or anyone who noticed anything suspicious in the area of the Park and Ride to contact them at (604) 515-8300.

Another assault occurred Feb. 6, and Surrey police have released a photograph of a suspect.

At about 4:30 p.m., a young woman was walking eastbound on 100th Avenue in the area of 123A Street and was grabbed by a man who approached her from behind. She managed to break free and the suspect fled southbound on 123A Street.

He’s an adult male, possibly Caucasian or Middle Eastern, and about 5-foot-10. He was wearing black sweatpants, black-and-white shoes, a black-hooded sweatshirt and a black-and-grey-checkered jacket.

“There is no indication that the two incidents are connected,” said Surrey Sgt. Lindsey Houghton. “Our analysts, however, will be looking at other cases in the region to see if there may be any similarities and, if there are, detectives will reach out to the respective agency.”

RCMP are investigating another sexual assault that happened last Friday around 7:45 p.m. near Lobley Park in the 6500 block of Burnaby’s Marlborough Avenue.

A woman in her 30s was walking in the park in the southwest corner, near Grimmer Street and Dunblane Avenue, when she was grabbed from behind by an unknown man. The suspect covered her mouth with one hand, and used the other to touch her groin and buttocks before she fought back and broke free. The suspect fled through the park towards Marlborough Avenue.

Despite tracking from a police dog and other front-line officers, the suspect was not located. He is described as 5-8 to 5-11, medium build, between 30 and 40 years old and wearing all black.

“Keeping in mind this happened at a time of day when it is dark and the woman was grabbed from behind, we are sharing the best description that is currently available,” said Burnaby RCMP Corporal Laura Hirst.
