Anahim Lake RCMP and specialist police divers recovered the bodies of two missing snowmobilers from Charlotte Lake in B.C.’s Chilcotin Region on Sunday.

Police received reports on Feb. 20 that the two snowmobilers, a 65-year-old man and a 58-year-old woman, hadn’t been seen since Feb. 17. While police set up a search, neighbours found the pair dead beneath the ice of the lake.

Investigators believe the snowmobiles broke through the ice on Feb. 17, with the lake refreezing and concealing the break in the ice in the following days.

The snowmobilers are from 100 Mile House and criminality isn’t believed to be a factor in their deaths.

“Variable temperatures significantly increase the risks associated with any activity on frozen lakes or rivers, and we urge everyone to use extreme caution,” said Anahim Lake RCMP detachment commander Sgt. Scott Clay in a news release. “Our thoughts are with the family and friends of the deceased during this difficult time.”
