The suspect testified that he found the knife in an alleyway and, due to his psychosis, believed it was a sign from God that he needed to protect himself from death.
But the court heard that a knife matching the same description and branding as the weapon used in the stabbing was seized from the suspect in 2017.
The accused called that coincidence “unfortunate.”
The Crown and the accused also gave different accounts of the stabbing.
The Crown suggested the accused attempted to stab Schmidt at least nine times, something he did not agree with.
The court has heard that Schmidt was stabbed six times with wounds to the neck, chest, and upper abdomen.
According to an agreed statement of facts, after the stabbing, the suspect looked back at Schmidt’s body, called him a derogatory term and then walked back into a Starbucks.
He also admitted in court that he had lied to police, doctors, and his sister after his arrest. He exaggerated how much he had been drinking and falsely claimed he had never been in a fight before.

He also told his sister that he had been taking his medications regularly, something he now says was not true.
The suspects also further told doctors he was no longer experiencing hallucinations, which he now says was also false.
He continued testifying that he lied because he was scared and believed it would help get him home sooner.
He also told police that before the stabbing, Schmidt directed a slur at him, referencing his medical conditions, including schizophrenia and diabetes.
Cross-examination ended with Pruim listing the lies the suspect had admitted to, to which the suspect responded that he hadn’t lied in court, prompting Pruim to reply, “That is one more time you have lied.”
