A pedestrian was taken to hospital in critical condition after being struck by a vehicle in New Westminster Saturday evening, BC Emergency Health Services says.

Emergency crews were called to the area of 8th Street and 4th Avenue shortly after 9:30 p.m.

The New West Police Department says the driver remained on scene and is cooperating with investigators.

Police are now canvassing the area for CCTV footage and looking for witnesses.

“It is believed several witnesses may have left the scene before police arrived,” said Sgt. Jacquelyn Mula.

“We’re asking anyone who may have witnessed this collision to please come forward and share with police what they saw.”
