Several brands of meal kits, shredded cheese sold in B.C. recalled over possible listeria contamination

Various shredded cheese products sold across Canada, including Bothwell, Goldstream, Only Goodness, Paradise Island and Sysco Reliance brand cheeses are part of the recall. Some Hello Fresh products are also affected.

Canadian consumers are being warned about possible listeria contamination in various processed foods, including salad and meal kits, and shredded cheese packages.

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency says Co-Op brand creamy garlic and spinach salad, sold in Alberta, B.C., Manitoba, Northwest Territories and Saskatchewan with best-before dates between March 24 and April 4 have been recalled because of Listeria monocytogenes.

Various brands of processed shredded cheese packages, sold across Canada, are also being recalled over listeria fears. Brands of cheese include Bothwell, Goldstream, Only Goodness, Paradise Island and Sysco Reliance.

In a separate recall, the agency warns that cheese ingredients included in certain Hello Fresh brand meal kits may also be contaminated with listeria and have been recalled. These include shredded Parmesan, feta, goat and mozzarella cheeses and cheese curds.

The agency says people should not consume, use, sell, serve or distribute any of these recalled products.

Food contaminated with listeria may not look or smell spoiled but can still make you sick, the agency says.

Symptoms can include vomiting, nausea, persistent fever, muscle aches, severe headache and neck stiffness. Pregnant people, the elderly and those with weakened immune systems are particularly at risk. Although pregnant people may experience only mild, flu-like symptoms, the infection can lead to premature delivery, infection of the newborn or even stillbirth.

In severe cases of illness, people may die, according to the agency.
