Four years after defeat, former Surrey mayor Doug McCallum enters municipal election

The former mayor of Surrey, Doug McCallum, announced on Monday that he is running for Surrey mayor.

McCallum had the top job at Surrey’s City Hall twice, first for three consecutive terms between 1996 and 2005.

Most recently, he served for another fourth term from 2018 to 2022, until he lost his re-election bid against current mayor Brenda Locke.

He will run as a candidate of the Safe Surrey Coalition.

Among others, he promises that if his slate wins a majority in Surrey’s City Council, it will propose four straight years of zero per cent property tax increases – similar to what Vancouver Mayor Ken Sim passed last year with his ABC majority.

“We are going to freeze that tax rate,” he said during a press conference on Monday in Surrey.

“A 0 percent property tax increase for four years, not 2 percent, not 1 percent, zero for four years, because right now families are stretched.”

McCallum is also promising a big boost in hiring for the Surrey Police Service (SPS).

He says that the city will buy the SPS its own helicopter.

His list of promises continues, including a SkyTrain extension, a new swimming pool, and redevelopment of Ocean Park.

So far, Surrey Mayor Brenda Locke and Coun. Linda Annis are among those who have announced their candidacy.

At the age of 81, McCallum is not the only former mayor who wants their old jobs back.

At the same time, Langley Township Mayor Eric Woodward says that he is also seeking another term.

Elections for municipal councils are scheduled for this October.
