B.C. police watchdog investigating after man went into medical distress during Port Coquitlam arrest

The Independent Investigations Office of BC (IIO) says it is looking into an arrest during which a man went into medical distress.

The RCMP was called to the area of Coquitlam Avenue near York Street in Port Coquitlam around 6:30 a.m. on Nov. 20, 2025.

When they arrived, they found a man and a woman inside a home.

“They then attempted to arrest the man, leading to an interaction between him and officers,” the IIO said in a news release.

“After he was detained, the man went into medical distress and was attended to by paramedics at the scene.”

The man was taken to hospital in serious condition.

“Investigators are continuing to review evidence, including medical records, and have now determined there is a connection to officer action or inaction,” the release said.

The IIO is called in after any police-related incidents that result in death or serious injury, whether or not there are any allegations of wrongdoing.
