Abbotsford police investigating two new school arsons

The Abbotsford Police Department (AbbyPD) says it is investigating two new cases of arson after it had already launched an investigation into a separate incident earlier this week.

The first of the two new incidents was discovered shortly after 3 a.m. Wednesday at the Bakerview Centre for Learning in Abbotsford — the site of the previously-reported arson on Monday.

Then on Friday, another fire was discovered at a portable classroom at Godson Elementary School.

Each fire was discovered in the early morning hours, with police responding shortly before 12:28 a.m. to Friday’s fire.

“Damage in this incident was minor, and the fire was later confirmed to be an arson,” Sgt. Paul Walker said in a statement.

Police added that the damage caused by the previous two fires was also minor, and no injuries have been reported.

“Upon arrival, officers found Abbotsford Fire and Rescue Service already on scene extinguishing a small fire,” said a police statement about Monday’s fire.

The Bakerview Centre for Learning, an alternative secondary school for students between the ages of 14 and 65, was closed for a few days this week due to the fires.

“AbbyPD’s Major Crime Unit is leading the investigation into all three incidents,” Walker explained.

Investigators say that it is too soon to say if the three incidents are related, as they are still examining evidence.

AbbyPD has not made any arrests yet, and officers are asking witnesses to contact police at 604-859-5225.
