Construction company sentenced to pay over $500,000 for worker’s death

The B.C. Supreme Court says that a Langley construction company has been fined to pay $575,000 as it was responsible for a worker’s death in 2012.

J. Cote and Son Excavating was replacing a combined sewer and sanitation pipe under a laneway on Edinburgh Street in Burnaby when a retaining wall collapsed.

The incident killed 28-year-old Jeffrey Caron and injured his coworker, Thomas Richer.

The judge ruled that the worksite presented signs of danger, explaining that a simple inspection would have detected that no tiebacks were put in place to reinforce the wall.

The judge adds that the company was focused on expediency rather than safety in their operations at the site.

Victim impact statements revealed that Caron was from Saskatchewan and that his parents had passed away before the end of the court case.

Richer still lives with chronic back pain and problems with various joints.

The two have been awarded victim surcharges.
