A gun was seized during the arrest of a driver in Surrey early Sunday morning, according to police.

The Surrey Police Service (SPS) said officers recovered a gun, three knives and ammunition during an incident that began around 1:30 a.m.

Police responded after a 911 caller reported a driver slumped over in a vehicle near the intersection of 18 Ave. and 138 St. When officers arrived, they found the vehicle stopped in the middle of the road.

According to SPS, officers boxed in the vehicle to prevent it from fleeing and attempted to contact the driver, who was initially unresponsive.

As officers tried to remove the driver from the vehicle to assess his medical condition, police say he regained consciousness and attempted to start the vehicle and drive away.

The driver was taken into custody, and officers subsequently discovered the firearm, knives, and ammunition.

The suspect remains in SPS custody.
