Sailings resume after BC Ferries vessel held at Duke Point terminal due to smoke in the galley

Sailings have resumed for a BC Ferries vessel that was being held at Duke Point terminal in Nanaimo as crews investigated a fire in the galley.

According to the service’s website, the Coastal Inspiration — which services the Duke Point to Tsawwassen route — was being held as crews were “helping emergency services with a situation.”

“The vessel was held in dock while crews investigated smoke in the galley,” BC Ferries told 1130 NewsRadio.

“The source was identified as an overheating bearing in the galley ventilator shaft, which has now been isolated.”

Shortly after 5 p.m., BC Ferries said Transport Canada had given the green light for the vessel to sail.

The service resumed with the 3:15 p.m. sailing, which left the terminal shortly after 5 p.m., two hours behind schedule.

BC Ferries says the incident had no impact on passenger safety.
