22 deaths recorded at correctional facilities in B.C. during 2025

The BC Coroners Service has released its report on how many deaths of incarcerated people happened last year.

For the year of 2025, there were 22 deaths in facilities across B.C. It includes deaths of incarcerated people transferred to hospital for medical treatment and deaths occurring in sheriff’s vehicles during transportation to a correctional facility.

It does however exclude deaths occurring at halfway houses for people on parole, in police custody such as in municipal police or RCMP cells, and at the Forensic Psychiatric Hospital.

All 22 of those deaths were males.

11 of the deaths took place at federal facilities and the other 11 took place at provincial facilities. For federal facilities, the most deaths happened at Pacific Institution in Abbotsford (8). For provincial facilities, the most deaths happened at North Fraser Pre-Trial Centre in Port Coquitlam (5) followed by Surrey Pre-Trial Centre (3).

Most deaths occurred among individuals aged 70+ (7 deaths; 32 per cent) and those aged 30-39 (6 deaths; 27 per cent).

From Jan. 1, 2014, to Dec. 31, 2024, the Coroners report has concluded investigations into 94 deaths. Data for investigations into 2025 deaths is not yet available.
