Upon arrival, officers found a man apparently suffering from gunshot wounds.
“Despite life-saving efforts, the man was pronounced deceased on scene,” said Sgt. Lindsey Houghton.
The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) launched an investigation upon arrival.
In an update Tuesday, IHIT says it has identified the victim as “a man in his 30s, who was at his place of work at the time of the shooting.”
He was inside a business on the second floor of the building at the time of the shooting.
It says he had no criminal history and was not previously the target of any reported threats or extortion.
Investigators are reportedly working with the victim’s family to establish background information and the circumstances of the shooting.
Sgt. Freda Fong described the shooting as “brazen” and showing a complete disregard for safety.
“Investigators are actively pursuing a number of priority tasks to identify those involved,” said Fong.
CityNews interviewed a person working in the business complex. He says that the violence in Surrey is making him nervous.
“The city that we are living in right now, shootings are becoming the norm. Every single day we wake up, and we hear about the shootings going on, homicides and extortions.”
The local radio station Swift Radio has its studio in the nearby area. Host Manimugdha Sharma tells CityNews that he shares that sentiment.
“To hear that somebody got killed right next to your office, I think, is the most shocking thing that has happened to me ever.”
Surrey Mayor Brenda Locke says that she plans to speak with the head of the local police board and the police chief about the most recent development.
“We really do have to take a hard look at what’s happening in our city. This cannot continue.”
Anyone with information on the incident is asked to call the IHIT information line at 1-877-551-IHIT (4448) or by email at ihitinfo@rcmp-grc.gc.ca.
Investigators are expected to address the media at 1:30 p.m.
