The Marine Mammal Rescue Centre (MMRC) has welcomed its first seal pup of the 2026 season into care.

A newborn male harbour seal pup was found in critical condition under the B.C. Ferry’s ramp on Haida Gwaii.

He has been named Sdlaana (“survivor” in X̱aayda Kil).

He is currently receiving around-the-clock care from the veterinary team at the centre.

“He is severely underweight and dehydrated, and our team is focused on stabilizing him and supporting his recovery step by step,” the MMRC said.

Sdlaana was brought to the centre by Pacific Coastal Airlines in order to get care as quickly as possible.
