Police say 12-year-old injured in e-scooter crash in North Vancouver

A 12-year-old child on an e-scooter was injured in a collision with a vehicle in North Vancouver on Wednesday.

At about 5 p.m., North Van RCMP responded to a report of a collision involving an e-scooter and a vehicle in the 3100-block of Colwood Drive.
Police allege the 12‑year‑old was riding an e‑scooter on Colwood and was struck by a black VW Jetta. The child was taken to hospital with minor injuries.
RCMP say the child’s guardian was issued several violation tickets for allowing someone under age 16 to ride an e-scooter.
Authorities are reminding people that to ride an electric kick scooter you must be at least 16 and that parents aren’t allowed to let their children under that age ride the scooters.
E-scooters also can’t be used on sidewalks or crosswalks, except if a sign or traffic control device allows for it. Riders must also wear helmets, not exceed 25 km/h, and use a horn when passing pedestrians. It’s not unusual to see youths riding e-scooters on streets and sidewalk across the Metro Vancouver region, and authorities say incidents of injury among youth are on the rise.
According to Trauma Services B.C., there has been a “clear upward trend in e-scooter-related injuries among children and youth,” with the number of youths with severe injuries rising from fewer than five cases in 2021 to 10 cases in 2024.
