The City of Langley said a leak at Langley Twin Rinks, located at 5700 Langley Bypass, was reported to the fire department shortly after 6:50 a.m.
Langley City Fire Rescue Service confirmed that ammonia gas was released inside the facility, prompting an evacuation.
“The cause of the release has been identified, and work is underway to address the issue,” the city said on its website.
The fire department has established a command post at the site, and a specialized contractor is addressing the leak. The Ministry of Environment is also monitoring the incident.
According to the city, the leak is contained to the building and its immediate vicinity.
As a precaution, officials temporarily issued a shelter-in-place advisory for apartment buildings south of the facility. Residents were asked to stay indoors and keep windows and doors closed.
The ice rink is expected to remain closed for most of Friday.
