Squamish RCMP and BC Highway Patrol say that an officer was conducting speed enforcement on Highway 99 around the time of the crash.

In a written statement on Monday, BC RCMP states that the officer saw “two motorcyclists who were reportedly speeding and driving erratically.”

“The officer left their position along the highway and moments later located one of the motorcyclists who was involved in a collision with a recreational vehicle,” the RCMP added.

In a statement released by the police watchdog, it says that “a member of the BC Highway Patrol attempted a traffic stop on two motorcycles travelling together southbound on Highway 99.”

However, the motorcycles did not stop.

Upon arrival at the crash scene, officers provided medical aid.

“The female motorcyclist was declared deceased at the scene,” the RCMP explained.

The IIO is now seeking witnesses to the incident.

The IIO BC investigates police action in incidents where officers are involved that result in serious injury or death.

Simultaneously, BC Highway Patrol is continuing its investigation into what led to the crash.

Witnesses or people with dashcam footage of the highway from Britannia Beach to the crash site are urged to contact police at 604-526-9744.

The incident had the highway closed for hours between Horseshoe Bay and Squamish overnight.

On social media, DriveBC says that the road reopened at 2 a.m. on Monday morning.
