The 17 and 23-year-old sisters with no restaurant or business experience took it upon themselves to open up a café in just one month.
The establishment, located steps away from Waterfront Station, is now named Unscripted.
“Now it’s like day 55 of something, so clearly it didn’t happen. It’s just like how our name is Unscripted. And we don’t know what we’re doing or how this was going to go,” said Angel Dee.
“Technically I worked at Tim Hortons for like six months, but I wouldn’t call it experience, it was just pressing buttons. This is very different for sure,” said Sara Dee.
The duo documented their journey on social media; learning how to use an espresso machine, renovating the space, and testing recipes..
But the biggest hurdle they had to overcome?
“The paperwork is the worst one, we were so excited about testing recipes, being more involved, but we spent 90 per cent of time in front of a laptop, which we didn’t want to do,” said Sara.
After nearly two months of hard work and long nights the two had a soft opening for the café on Wednesday.
They want the space to be an inviting corner in the busy financial district for people to socialize and unwind.
“This is my life savings, I mean we’ve worked since we’re young and we’re super cheap with everything, and this is just our one chance to bet it all,” said Angel.
“We want to inspire people to just go for it, it’s okay to learn as you go, you don’t need to know everything from the start. We’re in this, not at all to make money, for us it’s a learning experience and to inspire entrepreneurship.”
Their working menu incorporates flavours that reflect their Asian background with items like a sweet corn latte and mango slushy.
The sisters have the spot secured for the rest of the summer but the long term future of the café remains unscripted.
