A 34-year-old woman has been charged following an unprovoked assault in downtown Vancouver that left another woman hospitalized, according to the Vancouver Police Department (VPD).

Police say the attack occurred around 9:15 a.m. on Wednesday near the intersection of Robson and Homer streets.

According to investigators, a stranger allegedly choked the victim, bit her on the face and hand, and pulled her to the ground during the incident.

The suspect fled the area following the assault but was located and arrested approximately one block away, police said.

“The suspect and victim did not know each other, and the assault was unprovoked,” said Cst. Megan Lui.

“The motive is unknown at this time.”

The victim was taken to hospital for treatment of her injuries.

On Thursday, the B.C. Prosecution Service announced charges against the accused, including one count of assault causing bodily harm, and one count of assault by choking.

The accused remains in custody at this time.
