A new affordable housing and community services hub in Vancouver’s Riley Park neighbourhood has been completed, combining housing, childcare, community programming, public art, and gathering space under one roof.

The six-storey development at 167 E. 36th Ave. includes 48 affordable rental homes ranging from studio to three-bedroom units. The building also houses Little Mountain Neighbourhood House, which will provide 69 childcare spaces.

Mayor Ken Sim said the project responds to the needs of the family-oriented neighbourhood by expanding access to affordable housing, childcare and community services.

“This project delivers more than housing. It supports the community for years to come,” Sim said in a statement.

The affordable housing component will be operated by S.U.C.C.E.S.S. Affordable Housing Society. The homes will include a mix of shelter-rate, income-based and low-end-of-market rental units.

Ryan Drew, chief program officer at S.U.C.C.E.S.S., said the development will help residents establish roots and build connections within the community.

“The opening of this building is about creating a place where people can put down roots, build connections and feel a true sense of belonging,” Drew said.

Queenie Choo, chief executive officer of S.U.C.C.E.S.S., said secure housing provides a foundation for people and families to thrive and participate more fully in community life.

The project also features an attached community plaza overseen by the Vancouver Board of Parks and Recreation. The plaza includes a public art installation by Musqueam artist Susan Point.

Little Mountain Neighbourhood House is expected to open in the fall, while S.U.C.C.E.S.S. will begin leasing the affordable housing units in the coming months.
