A man is in custody after allegedly displaying a firearm to a customer at a coffee shop in New Westminster early Thursday morning, according to police.

The New Westminster Police Department (NWPD) said officers responded to a 911 call around 6 a.m. for an incident on the patio of a coffee shop in Columbia Square.

Police said the suspect fled the area as officers arrived, running across Columbia Street and through a hole in a fence bordering the railway tracks before crossing to the other side.

Officers launched a search that included the use of a police drone and assistance from the Lower Mainland District Integrated Police Dog Service.

The man was subsequently located and arrested.

According to NWPD, officers found several prohibited weapons, knives, and cans of bear spray during a search of the suspect following the arrest.

Police said the firearm involved in the incident was recovered nearby a short time later.

No injuries were reported. NWPD has not released the identity of the suspect, and the investigation remains ongoing.
