Summer Lights in English Bay is set to light up Vancouver’s beachfront for one night only on July 31.

The fireworks display is scheduled to begin at approximately 10 p.m. and will illuminate the sky for about 25 minutes.

The event has sparked debate since it was announced. Vancouver Mayor Ken Sim proposed the fireworks show following the cancellation of the Celebration of Light, but the event carries a price tag of roughly $2 million.

Despite the controversy, the display will be Vancouver’s only free public fireworks show of the summer, with hundreds of thousands of people expected to gather at English Bay and surrounding areas.

According to the City of Vancouver, the event will also feature a licensed drinking lounge and a variety of food trucks for attendees.
