A 16-year-old boy was issued almost $1,000 in fines after allegedly fleeing from police while riding an e-dirt bike in Burnaby.

Burnaby RCMP say a Traffic Services officer spotted the rider performing wheelies and speeding along Government Road in North Burnaby on Aug. 28.

When the officer attempted a traffic stop, the rider allegedly crossed into oncoming traffic, ran a stop sign and fled the area. Police said the officer did not pursue because of public‑safety concerns.

About 25 minutes later, the rider returned to the area and officers were able to stop him.

Police determined the rider was a 16-year-old who held a Class 7 driver’s licence. His father was contacted and came to the scene.

The youth was issued a total of $938 in fines. RCMP said he would likely face a driver’s licence suspension as a result of the incident.

“E-dirt bikes are not permitted on our roads, no matter your age,” said Burnaby RCMP Cpl. Mike Kalanj in a statement.

“Having your licence suspended and paying a fine is a much better outcome than the potential consequences police have recently seen at collisions involving these types of vehicles.”

Burnaby RCMP is reminding the public that e-dirt bikes are not permitted for use on public roads and that riders who break traffic laws can face significant penalties.
