The BC Wildfire Service (BCWS) has rescinded the area restriction order that had been in place around the Bald Range wildfire since Aug. 29.

In an update issued Friday afternoon, BCWS said fire behaviour and activity have decreased to the point that firefighters no longer need to restrict public access to the area.

Despite the change, BCWS noted that the wildfire remains an active incident and cautioned anyone entering the area to remain vigilant.

“While the area restriction has been lifted, the fire area remains an active work site,” BCWS said, adding that officials still have authority under the Wildfire Act to order people to leave the area if necessary.

The service is warning the public about several ongoing hazards, including damaged and unstable trees, hot ash pits that may not show visible flames, and the risk of falling debris.

Residents and visitors may continue to see smoke in the area over the coming weeks. According to BCWS, smoke rising from within the fire perimeter or from burned material is considered normal. However, anyone who sees smoke coming from green, unburned vegetation is asked to report it.
