The BC Highway Patrol (BCHP) is out with a reminder: whether driving for work or recreation, everyone must obey the law and drive safely.

This comes after an incident over the weekend on the Sea to Sky Highway near Porteau Cove. Police say that around 11 a.m. Sunday, a BCHP motorcycle operator clocked a white Toyota Corolla doing 133 km/h in an 80 zone. The Corolla was a taxi, and the BCHP says the passenger sitting in the back seat had just had their own vehicle impounded for excessive speed.

“Professional drivers do not get a pass to disobey the law,” said Sgt. Michael McLaughlin.

“They are expected to know better.”

The 65-year-old taxi driver, a resident of Squamish, had the vehicle impounded for seven days and was issued a ticket for excessive speed.

McLaughlin says passengers have the right to ask their drivers to obey the law.

“If you’re not comfortable with a taxi or ride-share driver speeding or driving distracted, say something,” he said.

The BCHP says it impounded 21 vehicles for excessive speed on the Sea to Sky over the Labour Day long weekend.
