Nanaimo RCMP are asking for witnesses and dashcam footage following two overnight break-ins at separate Tim Hortons locations that investigators believe may be linked.

Police say the first incident occurred around midnight on Sept. 8 at the Tim Hortons located at 1980 Island Highway North in Brooks Landing Mall. Investigators say a suspect gained entry by prying open the drive-thru window.

CCTV footage obtained by police shows a masked man wearing dark clothing, gloves and a hooded sweatshirt entering the restaurant before leaving through the front door. RCMP said nothing appears to have been stolen from the business.

A second break-in was reported at approximately 1:43 a.m. on Sept. 9 at the Tim Hortons located at 519 Fifth St.

According to RCMP, the suspect entered through the drive-thru window. Surveillance footage shows a heavier-set man wearing a grey T-shirt, dark pants, gloves and a ski mask, while carrying a black backpack.

Officers, including Police Dog Services, responded to the scene, but the suspect had already fled.

Police say the suspect stole an undisclosed amount of cash.

“Based on the similarities in the methods used to gain entry and the suspects captured on video, investigators believe the same individual may be responsible for both break and enters,” said Insp. Donovan Tait.

Investigators are seeking dashcam footage from either area around the time of the incidents. Anyone with information is asked to contact Nanaimo RCMP.
