The New Westminster Police Department (NWPD) says a man is facing charges after breaking into a restaurant and then hiding from police last week.

On Sept. 5, shortly before 2:30 a.m., police say two witnesses approached a NWPD officer to report a possible break-in in progress at a restaurant, located near 10th Street and Carnarvon Street.

When police arrived, they found broken glass and a masked individual inside the restaurant.

“Additional officers attended and established containment around the property,” NWPD said.

“Over the course of the investigation, officers made numerous announcements directing the suspect to surrender.”

Police say they deployed a drone and conducted a search with a police dog.

“Officers subsequently entered the restaurant to conduct a secondary search and discovered the suspect hiding in a small crawl space above the kitchen area,” they said.

“The suspect was taken into custody without incident and arrested for break and enter.”

Police say the accused was held in custody pending a bail hearing.
