The Vancouver Police Department (VPD) says it has made its largest-ever seizure of cocaine.

Police say they seized almost 329 kilograms of the substance, worth an estimated $5.8 million, from a shipping container in the southeast part of the city.

On July 21, staff at a business reported finding 14 duffle bags full of drugs hidden among a legitimate order of T-shirts.

“Obviously, the business was shocked by what it found,” said Sgt. Travis Fraser.

“They called police right away and are in no way associated with the seized cocaine.”

“This amount of drugs, as well as the stamps and packaging, clearly indicates organized crime is behind the shipment,” he said.

Investigators say the shipping container was sent from Honduras on May 18 and loaded onto a container ship. The vessel stopped in Jamaica June 6 and arrived in Montreal July 5.

“We believe the cocaine was supposed to be removed prior to its arrival at the company,” Fraser said.

“For some reason, it was not unloaded.”

The VPD says it is working with the RCMP and authorities in Canada, Honduras, Jamaica, and the United States in its investigation.
