Howe Sound mill saved by provincial government partnership, says Domtar

The Howe Sound mill will remain open after the company that owns it reached an agreement with the provincial government.

The company, Domtar, says the mill will undergo previously scheduled maintenance before returning to regular operations.

In a statement on Thursday, Domtar thanked the provincial government for working with them at a time where the forestry sector is facing “extraordinary pressures.”

“While the forest industry continues to face significant economic and competitive challenges, Domtar believes this collaboration represents an important first step toward supporting a strong and sustainable future for the sector,” read the statement.

The Howe Sound mill employs approximately 400 people in Port Mellon on the Sunshine Coast.
