OMNI wins at the 40th Jack Webster awards

It was a big night for OMNI News at the 2026 Jack Webster Awards held Monday at the Hyatt Regency in Vancouver.

OMNI’s Sarbraj Singh Kahlon won the Excellence in Multilingual Journalism award, for his reporting produced with Allan Chek, Kristin Johnson and Sonia Kalra.

Kahlon’s winning piece was a story on how extortion fears among Vancouver builders drove policy changes at City Hall.

In his speech, Kahlon thanked his mentors, leaders, family, and friends. He also gave credit to all those who have trusted him with their stories.

“On my way here tonight, I thought of everyone who has trusted me with their stories. I carry that trust with humility and gratitude.”

Kahlon also acknowledged his roots and how it helped his work as a journalist.

“With Remembrance Day approaching, I am reminded of those who served and sacrificed. In 1897, Sikh soldiers passed through Vancouver. Their journey became a part of Canadian story.”

“Our duty is to give back, serve Canada, and leave it stronger for those who follow.”

The Webster Awards marks its 40th anniversary in celebrating the best of BC journalism every year.
