A Chilliwack man has been identified as the victim killed in a targeted shooting Friday evening near Surrey’s Guildford Town Centre.
On Friday just before midnight, Jaskaran Birring, 26, was found suffering from life-threatening injuries on 105 Avenue, between 152nd and 153rd streets. First responders were unable to save him.
At the time, police had said the shooting was targeted but not related to the recent string of extortion cases. In Monday’s update, the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team said Birring had “previous interactions with the police” and links to the drug trade.
Minutes after Birring was found shot, police located a white Dodge Ram pickup truck on fire near 136th Street and 115 Avenue, about a 10-minute drive away from Guildford Town Centre.
“Early indications suggest this was a targeted incident related to organized crime,” said IHIT’s Sgt. Freda Fong in a statement.
“Investigators are working diligently to determine the circumstances surrounding the homicide and to identify all parties involved.”
Investigators are now hoping anyone with information or video footage between 9 p.m. to 12 a.m. that night, from either where the shooting took place or where the truck was found on fire, are willing to come forward with that material to help police.
Anyone with information is asked to contact IHIT’s tip line at 1-877-551-4448 or by email at

The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team was on site and there was a black SUV under a yellow tarp connected to the investigation.
