It has been almost one year since the Lapu-Lapu Day tragedy, and the Filipino community came together to mark the occasion with a Day of Togetherness on Sunday.
This year’s event took place at the Il Centro Italian Cultural Centre instead of being outside.

As a remembrance to those who were lost last year, a moment of reflection was observed.
“I feel so overwhelmed with gratitude for all of those who came down to support [us] and have that moment of reflection with us. It was very moving,” said Céline Loriot, board director of Filipino BC.

The moment saw people talk about their experiences and what healing meant to them.
“We also had a flower installation where people could lay a flower and a little message,” shared Loriot.
The morning was dedicated to a reflective gathering for community healing, with the hope that those attending could live in the moment.
The afternoon is dedicated to cultural appreciation.
“We have some of the vendors that were there last year that felt that they wanted to come back and support us this year at the Lapu-Lapu Day of Togetherness, and my heart feels so full that they wanted to.”

In the evening, the festival will focus on cultural performances and the Filipino value of collective care, Bayanihan.
“Whether that looks like sharing a meal together, singing with one another, or just holding each other close – there is no right way to be here,” explained Loriot.
Loriot hopes a vigil will be held on the actual one-year anniversary, but wants to make sure people know to do or feel however they need to in the moment.
“Coming to the Lapu-Lapu Day of Togetherness is not the only way to show support. It is just one part of the longer journey to healing. We’re just very thankful for the love and support from the community.”
