How the new Port Moody elementary school will improve densification issues in the area

A teachers’ association in the Tri-Cities says a new, expanded elementary school in Port Moody will benefit the local community once the construction of the facility is finished.

On April 24, the B.C. government announced the new elementary school, located right next to Moody Middle School along St. Johns Street, will provide 385 spaces for students in downtown Port Moody.

Ken Christensen, the president of the Coquitlam Teachers Association, says the new school will address increasing densification in Port Moody.

“[The old Moody Elementary school] had just basically outgrown its footprint and had portables on site and needed a renovation that would have been impossible,” said Christensen.

In November 2025, Coquitlam School District #43 addressed the increased densification near the catchment area of the old Moody Elementary School.

The new elementary school will make a difference as it will offer a better place to learn for kids and easier access to the supports that parents need, says Rick Glumac, MLA for Port Moody-Burquitlam.

Christensen says parents were delighted to see the school, which they had long desired, being built.

He also said the shared site between Port Moody elementary and middle school will make it easier for children to transition from one school to another.

“Now, once their transportation is arranged to the school site, it’s simple enough for them to move to the middle school that’s just across the field from where they’ve been going all along,” said Christensen.

Christensen says as more buildings are erected and families move to the area, schools need to encompass the new students as well.

“That’s why building new infrastructure, new buildings, is important.”
