The suspect is accused of killing Harvey James Lee-Bernick at a home near the intersection of McCrimmon Drive and Maple Street on December 14 last year.
Police say that officers responded to the incident shortly after 11 a.m.
Upon arrival, police located a 41-year-old man suffering from life-threatening injuries.
“Despite life-saving efforts at the scene and transport to the hospital, the man died from his injuries,” said Sgt. Freda Fong.
A suspect was taken into custody on the same day but later released, “pending further investigation.”
IHIT took over the investigation in cooperation with the Abbotsford Police Major Crimes Unit (MCU), Forensic Identification Services (FIS), and the BC Coroners Service, examining the scene and forensic findings.
“IHIT investigators worked tirelessly to determine the exact role and involvement of a number of individuals who were identified at the outset,” Fong added.
“The laying of a charge is a significant step, and our thoughts are with Mr. Bernick’s loved ones as the court proceedings begin.”
Police did not clarify if the person who has now been charged is the same suspect who was arrested on December 14.
The suspect’s next court appearance is scheduled for June 15.
Investigators say that there is no threat to the public since they believe that the incident was targeted and that the involved parties were known to each other.
