Police arrest suspect in first of 3 Abbotsford school arsons

The Abbotsford Police Department (AbbyPD) says it has made an arrest in connection with one of three incidents of arson at two schools earlier this month.

On April 22, a 34-year-old man was taken into custody and charged in connection with the first incident, which took place on April 13 at the Bakerview Centre for Learning.

Two days after this arson, a second fire was deliberately set at the same school, police say. Then, on April 17, a third fire was discovered, this one at a portable classroom at Godson Elementary School. The suspect hasn’t been charged in connection with either of these two incidents.

All three fires were discovered in the early morning hours, according to the AbbyPD. In all incidents, damage was minor, police said after the third fire.

No injuries were reported.

The man has been charged with arson as well as a Breach of Release Order, which police say stems from his arrest on April 22.

He remains in custody. Investigations are ongoing for the other two arsons, and it is unclear if the three fires are related.
