3 dead after clam-fishing boat capsizes near Savary Island, RCMP says

Three men are dead after the boat they were on capsized off the shore of Savary Island Thursday, the Powell River RCMP says.

The boat had been carrying five men, who were fishing for clams. Two of the men reportedly made it to shore, the RCMP says. The three deceased had originally been reported missing.

The Joint Rescue Coordination Centre was alerted after the boat failed to make it back to Lund Harbour as it was expected to.

Search and rescue teams were deployed immediately, police say.

The RCMP and Savary Island Fire searched along the shoreline, where the three men were found dead.

The two survivors were taken to hospital in Powell River.

Mounties say they are assisting the BC Coroners Service with an investigation into the incident.
