The Langley School District has introduced new rules governing the use and storage of e-scooters and e-bikes on school property.

Beginning this September, e-scooters and e-bikes will be prohibited at all district school sites, including elementary, middle and secondary schools.

The district said the changes are being made as a health and safety measure amid an increase in e-scooter and e-bike incidents across the Lower Mainland, including cases involving serious injuries.

Under the new policy, e-pedal bikes will continue to be permitted at secondary schools. Light e-bikes may be used by students aged 14 and 15, while standard e-bikes are allowed for students aged 16 and older. Adults will be permitted to use e-pedal bikes at all schools.

School officials say students will be informed of the new rules at the start of the school year. The district is also encouraging parents and guardians to discuss the changes with their children.

The district added that it will work alongside the Ministry of Education and Child Care, the Ministry of Transportation and Transit, ICBC and the Langley RCMP to promote safe riding practices and educate students about safety regulations.
