BC Highway Patrol (BCHP) officers found that while a speeding driver was not stopped during roadside intervention, a continued investigation still caught the speeder.

BCHP officers from Cranbrook were on patrol near Fairmont Hot Springs when they say they saw an Audi sedan doing 230 km/h in an 80 km/h zone, police say.

BCHP say they were unable to pull the Audi over as it was travelling at too high a speed. 

Despite not being able to stop the car at the initial sighting, BCHP say they continued their investigation.

Witnesses told BCHP officers that the car had entered a campground, police say.

Police say they found the Audi, which was parked and empty. 

Through continued investigation, BCHP say they found the driver, who they suspected was under the influence of alcohol. 

Officers obtained a breath sample from the driver, which returned a reading of “WARN,” say BCHP.

The 20-year-old man from Alberta was immediately issued a three-day roadside prohibition. 

He also got:

• A violation ticket for excessive speeding.
• A violation ticket for driving without a driver’s licence.
• A seven-day vehicle impoundment.
• Fines totalling $959 under the Motor Vehicle Act 
• A referral to the Alberta administrative body that reviews driving sanctions for drivers in that province. 

“Not every investigation ends with flashing lights and a traffic stop,” said Sgt. Brett Reiben, unit commander for BCHP Cranbrook. 

“This is a great example of persistent police work and good information from the public that held a driver accountable for his dangerous driving behaviour.”
